nuthatchThis past weekend, a crowd of bird enthusiasts gathered at the Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center.  They took to the woods and nearby waters to learn more about bird identification and bird behavior.  They purchased bird friendly coffee, and they listened to lectures about songbird health.  Kinna Ohman joined the birders.  She reports on a project to study songbirds in the northern Adirondacks – and – what it’s like to take part in the annual Teddy Roosevelt Birding Challenge. The program was sponsored by the Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center and the Adirondack Park Institute.  More information about Dr. Jorie Favreau’s research is on her home page. Brian McAllister has written up some of his field experiences on his blog, Adirondacks…Naturally. You can hear the songs of different birds, starting with the red-breasted nuthatch, at Cornell’s All About Birds website:  Red-Breasted Nuthatch.  And, if you are interested in bird-friendly coffee, visit Wild Birds Unlimited.
