One of the critters who’s probably most relieved that snow has finally arrived in the Adirondacks is the Varying (or Snowshoe) Hare. Because this hare changes coat colors twice a year – and because the change is triggered by daylight hours and not the weather – the Varying Hare can stand out with its winter white coat during late snow years.

Tom and Jackie Kalinowski take to the Adirondack woods in this latest episode of Nature in the Adirondacks. They discover that the hare has more ways of surviving the winter than donning a white coat.
